From Rome to Berlin: The EU's 50th anniversary

In 2007 the European Union celebrated the 50th anniversary of the signature of the Treaty of Rome and a declaration was presented during a special ceremony in Berlin.

In April 2007, SIEPS and the Swedish Institute of International Affairs organised a seminar highlighting central aspects of the first 50 years of European integration.

The invited speakers were asked to reflect upon the past, present and future of European integration with special reference to the sources of legitimacy, the goals and means of integration as well as its underlying norms and values. This publication consists of the written contributions by the speakers invited by SIEPS.

The report was preseneted at SIEPS' Annual Conference From Rome to Berlin – the EU's 50th anniversary and is a part of the research project Representation, delegation and democracy.
