Webinar 31 May: Europarties and the Future of Ukraine

What role can the Europarties play in supporting Ukraine’s progress towards stable, consolidated democracy and EU membership? This question was discussed in a webinar on 31 May by experts from Ukraine and the EU, including Dr Mats Öhlén, who presented his new SIEPS analysis on the topic.

Since the 1990s the ‘Europarties’ – the umbrella organisations for European political parties – have built alliances with political parties in states at the EU’s borders, and many of these states went on to join the Union. This process is also happening in Ukraine, and cooperation has intensified following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. What role can these relationships play for Ukraine’s path towards democratization and EU membership?

On 31 May leading experts discussed this question and others with the author of a new analysis on Europarties’ work in Ukraine, Dr Mats Öhlén, Senior Lecturer in Political Science at Dalarna University.
