New World Order – Implications for Europe

As Europe faces a rapidly changing security environment, questions about defence, economic resilience and technological sovereignty are becoming increasingly urgent. This conference brings together leading researchers and academics to discuss how the European Union can respond to these challenges and strengthen its role in a new geopolitical landscape.

The security architecture that has underpinned Europe for decades is undergoing profound change. Against the backdrop of Russia’s war against Ukraine and growing geopolitical competition, the European Union faces mounting pressure to enhance its capacity to act, safeguard its interests and strengthen its security.

At the same time, member states hold differing views on key issues such as threat perception, financing and governance, raising important questions about the future direction of European cooperation.

To explore these challenges, SIEPS is bringing together leading academics and researchers for a conference on the implications of the emerging world order for Europe.
This conference will focus on four areas:

  • the EU taking on more responsibility for European security and defence
  • the single market as a tool for economic security
  • the predicament of technological sovereignty
  • how these policies and challenges affect the institutional framework of the Union.
