Rethinking European defence in a new security era
During this year’s Almedalen Week, Sieps is organising a seminar on European security policy. Sieps’ Director, Göran von Sydow, will be taking part alongside the ambassadors from France, Germany and the United Kingdom, as well as Niklas Bremberg, Director of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, continued instability in Europe’s neighbourhood, and growing uncertainty about the future of transatlantic security guarantees have intensified pressure on European states to assume greater responsibility for their own defence. Questions about the credibility and functioning of NATO lead to intensified discussions about both about what role the European Union can play in the area of security and defence as well as the various different formats that can contribute to strengthening European security.
